Freight - the whole bill

$19,944to move 500 tonnes 180 km - $39.89 a tonne

12 truck loads × 180 km × 2 (charged both ways) = 4,320 km charged, plus $150.00 a load.

The last truck carries 38 t - 90% full. If the carrier charges a full load for it, sending 4 t more fills it and brings the cost down to $39.57 a tonne; or ask whether 462 t in 11 loads plus a smaller truck is cheaper.

Freight is 12.5% of the $320.00 a tonne value - a big share, so it is worth getting a second quote or checking a closer buyer or sale.

How we work it out

  • Truck loads: how much ÷ one truck load, rounded up. Km charged: loads × distance, × 2 when the carrier charges the empty trip back.
  • Freight: km charged × your rate a km, plus the charge a load × loads. A tonne, head or bale: freight ÷ how much you move.
  • Part load: what the last truck carries and the cost a unit if every truck went full. % of value: freight a unit ÷ the value a unit.

This is arithmetic on your own numbers, not advice - we don’t quote freight rates. Carriers price in different ways (a rate a km, a rate a tonne or a deck, a minimum charge, fuel levies, waiting time), so check what your quote includes and ask for it in writing. Legal loads depend on the truck and the road, and livestock must be fit to load and moved under your state’s animal welfare rules. Work out tonnes off the paddock with the harvest & truck loads calculator, bales with the hay & silage bale calculator and whether to sell now with the store or sell grain calculator. Nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere.
