Silo capacity calculator

How many tonnes will it hold, and how much is in it now? Enter your silo's size and the grain's bulk density to get cubic metres and tonnes, full and at today's level.

Your silo

Across the inside of the silo.

Straight wall only - from the top of the hopper (or the floor) to the eaves.

0 for a flat-bottom silo.

Eaves to the peak. Enter 0 if you never fill into the roof.

Depends on the grain and its test weight - check your delivery docket or the buyer. The starting number is only an example.

Measured up the wall from the top of the hopper (level it out first). Leave the example to see a part-full silo.

How we work it out

  • Walls: π × radius² × wall height.
  • Hopper and roof: each a cone, π × radius² × height ÷ 3.
  • Tonnes: cubic metres × bulk density (t/m³).

An estimate for a round silo with a level surface. Real capacity depends on how the grain peaks or cones when filling, moisture, compaction, the exact shape and your manufacturer's rating - check the silo plate or maker's figures, and never enter a silo to measure. Nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere. Need bushels, short tons or cubic feet? Try the farm unit converter.
