Grazing rotation planner

How long will each paddock feed the mob, and will the paddocks get the rest you want? Put in your paddocks, stock and pasture cover to see days per paddock, rest and days a lap.

Your rotation

How many paddocks (or cells) the mob moves through.

Days each paddock should rest before it is grazed again.

Grazing area of one paddock. 1 acre = 0.405 ha.

Your mob

Animals grazing together.

A rough average for the mob is fine.

Dry matter eaten a day. Use your own or your adviser’s figure.

Your pasture

Pasture on offer when the mob goes in (your estimate or pasture ruler/plate reading).

The residual you want left when the mob moves out.

Optional: your local growth rate now. 0 to skip.

Each paddock feeds the mob for about 5.3 days, close to the 5 days per move that gives 35 days of rest. Your numbers roughly balance.

How we work it out

  • Feed per paddock: (cover going in − cover to leave) × paddock size, in kg of dry matter.
  • Days in each paddock: feed per paddock ÷ what the mob eats a day (head × liveweight × intake %).
  • Rest: while the mob is in one paddock the others rest, so rest = days in each paddock × (paddocks − 1). Cover after the rest = cover left + growth rate × rest days.

A planning estimate from your own numbers, assuming paddocks of a similar size and cover. Pasture grows at different speeds through the year, so walk the paddocks and move stock on what you see, and ask your agronomist or adviser about the right covers and rest for your pasture and stock. Nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere. Short of feed? Try the feed budget calculator; for acres and other units use the farm unit converter.
